Remembering Sonia Walker: Her Journey Through Adversity and Triumph
Sonia Walker, born on March 17, 1932, passed away on January 6, 2021, due to COVID-19 complications. The lockdowns starting in March 2020 prevented us from seeing her in person, but I cherished our almost daily visits before that, where I assisted her with brain training Sessions. I was fortunate to be by her side during her final moments, thanks to the compassionate hospital staff who allowed it. Rest in peace, Mother...
Late-Life Diagnoses and the Start of Brain Training
In her 80s, Sonia was facing several significant health challenges that affected her independence and daily life. During that time, she began brain training with NeurOptimal® in February 2016. (Note: NeurOptimal® is a training tool, not a treatment for any condition.)
Sonia had always expressed to her sons that she never wanted to live in a nursing home. Ironically, that's where she spent her final years and not only did she adjust, but she truly thrived in the environment, forming connections and finding joy.
The Power of NeurOptimal® Brain Training in Her Daily Life
This heartfelt interview at the top of this blog was recorded in Spring 2018, after more than two years of nearly daily brain training Sessions, totaling well over 100 Sessions. While NeurOptimal® isn't a treatment for disorders like bipolar or Alzheimer's, Sonia experienced remarkable personal growth. Staff who knew her when she first went there remarked how amazing her transformation was, from a very difficult patient to the most delightful person to be around. She adored the system's default music by Grammy Award-winning composer Jeff Bova but especially loved pairing her Sessions with opera, particularly The Three Tenors.
We shared wonderful moments “attending” opera performances together during her training. As she progressed, Sonia became passionate about sharing her story to inspire others on similar paths. We created several videos documenting her brain training journey, highlighting her transformation and encouraging seniors to explore neurofeedback for brain health.
