Brain Training for Children & School
Parent-approved screen timeAs parents, when we think about our children and their success in school, most of us typically think we want them to be happy as they make new friends. We want them to study their school subjects and learn how to be independent as they grow. As an educator, I hear those points and translate them to refining socialization, cognitive and problem solving/reasoning skills.

So What Does That Mean?
When we, as educators, break those skills down even more, we think of:
- Socialization Skills help with being happy, communicating with others, resolving conflict and learning to compromise.
- Cognitive Skills cover what we think of as reading, writing, math, science, history, health, and P.E.
- Problem Solving/Reasoning Skills relate to the “what if’s” (problem solving) and the “yeah buts” (reasoning), skills needed for them to survive on their own.
To develop these skills, we find other related areas important for our children to master: Attention and focus, listening, remembering, organizing and understanding how things relate to one another as examples. This is of course an over-simplification of a massive skill set; we can nonetheless understand how important so many of these areas are for our children’s day-to-day, affecting everything from completing homework and following topics at school to staying organized enough to put their backpack together.
Training Your Mind & Your Body

School is most beneficial when the students, staff and parents are in peak mental condition. NeurOptimal® Brain Training does exactly that, allowing the individual to perform at their optimal level. NeurOptimal® does not specifically work on any one skill. Instead, it works globally, by developing the ability for transition, to respond and react when needed and to adjust to change flexibly.
Can you imagine how all the basic skills mentioned above would flourish if your child were able to respond and adjust more quickly and effectively? Every brain, and so every child, is capable of this, and each one will train differently. But even though how they learn will be different, a common thing we have found among them is how their personal journeys are subtle ones – without much of a cue, they will soon start doing things that give the impression of maturing faster than their peers. Many parents report their child getting their backpacks together on their own, finishing their homework without being reminded and thinking ahead to be more organized. The ability to perform optimally in Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Language, Problem Solving and Social Personal skills will promote better performance in all areas of school, from sports to grades. Who wouldn’t want that for their child?
Being a teenager was never easy! Moodiness, resistance and insecurity in our teenagers can all be indicators of teen stress or other issues.
Teen stress is overlooked and its impact on mental and physical health is often underestimated. Potential causes of stress in teenagers can be related to academic life, social life, sexual identity or even related to trauma, family discord and world events (such as this current pandemic). Your teen may appear agitated, anxious, depressed or withdrawn. They may be struggling with negative peer pressure, as well as juggling with pressure to perform in sports and academia. Don’t ignore it or sweep it under the rug!

While there is no cure for being a teenager, we as parents naturally look for ways that can help our kids grow and thrive, while minimizing their struggles and stress. There is no universal playbook! Physical exercise can help mitigate the effects of stress but so can tapping into brain training which can help promote wellness, feelings of calm and confidence while improving focus and building resilience.
Let’s help our teens be better prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead by becoming the very best versions of themselves.
